Finance History|Nasdaq MarketSite — A PostScript Shop Prints a Book Called ADBE
kevin
People treat Adobe as a San Jose subscription house that always printed ADBE on a mature Nasdaq book.
The first public print was a four-year-old PostScript shop that did not need the cash.
John Warnock and Charles Geschke founded Adobe Systems in December 1982 after Xerox would not ship their page-description language.
The firm incorporated in California on 26 October 1983.
Apple's LaserWriter, shipped in 1985, used PostScript and gave the private company a royalty stream.
Adobe's own investor FAQ records the initial public offering on 20 August 1986. Common stock listed on Nasdaq under the letters ADBE.
A company fact sheet later restated that offering as a split-adjusted 0.17 U.S. dollars a share. The raw 1986 print is a coarser unit than the share on the tape today.
The product on the book was a language licensed into printers, not a boxed application suite.
The pin is the Times Square MarketSite board that later carried the tape. The 1986 print itself ran on Nasdaq's dealer network, not inside a visitor studio.
The mechanism is a royalty-funded software IPO that listed a page-description language before Photoshop had a commercial name.
