People treat FirstEnergy as an Akron utility that always printed FE after a finished Ohio book.
The November 1997 issuer was FirstEnergy Corp., organized under Ohio law in 1996 as a holding company for a merger.
On 7 November 1997 Ohio Edison Company acquired Centerior Energy Corporation and its operating companies for about 1.6 billion dollars in stock, in 1997 currency.
Ohio Edison had printed OEC on the New York tape.
Centerior had printed CX.
The holding company became effective on 8 November 1997.
Common shares opened under the letters FE on the New York Stock Exchange that same month.
The mechanism is a utility-for-utility stock merger that retired two listed Ohio books and kept one listed shell.
The letters changed.
The New York book did not start over.
The pin is the Broad Street facade of the Exchange on the morning the FE ticker opened.
Interior trading is not visitable from the sidewalk.
