Finance History|11 Wall Street — FES Stopped and a Buffalo Book Printed MTB

People treat M and T Bank as a Buffalo holding company that always printed MTB after a finished New York book.
The 1998 issuer was M and T Bank Corporation, the renamed successor of First Empire State Corporation.
The bank itself traces to Manufacturers and Traders Bank, which opened in Buffalo in 1856.
The holding company's own FAQ dates the American Stock Exchange tape under FES to March 1988, after an earlier Nasdaq book under FEMP.
A 19 May 1998 company release said stockholders had authorized the name change effective 1 June 1998 and that an application to list on the New York Stock Exchange had been filed.
The same release said the new letters would be MTB and that FES would keep printing on the American Stock Exchange until that Monday.
A Federal Register notice dated 24 June 1998 records that Form 8-A became effective on 27 May 1998 and that New York trading under the new name began at the opening on 1 June 1998, with the American Stock Exchange book suspended the same morning.
The letters MTB still open on the New York Stock Exchange.
The mechanism is a 1998 exchange transfer that changed both the venue and the letters without a cash primary offering.
The pin is the public Broad Street facade of the 1903 New York Stock Exchange building, the present street marker for the tape that prints MTB.
Interior trading is not visitable from the sidewalk.
