After taking in the serenity of Hōkoku Shrine and the statue of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, we made our way toward the main tower of Osaka Castle — the crown jewel of the grounds. We purchased our tickets and joined the stream of visitors gathered at the base of the keep, cameras in hand, trying to capture the grandeur of the structure. The castle, with its striking green roof tiles and golden shachihoko (tiger-headed carp) ornaments gleaming under the sun, was a breathtaking sight. Its elegant façade stands in stark contrast to its war-torn past.
Despite the crowds of tourists, the atmosphere buzzed with excitement. We took our time admiring the castle from all angles, snapping photos and soaking in the view before beginning our ascent. Inside, we climbed the series of staircases that led to the top floor, stopping along the way to explore the Osaka Castle Museum, which is housed within the tower.
Each level of the exhibition offered a window into the rich and tumultuous history of the castle. Originally built in the late 16th century by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the castle was a symbol of his power and vision to unify Japan after decades of civil war. However, after Hideyoshi’s death, the castle became a focal point in the struggle between the Toyotomi clan and the Tokugawa shogunate. It was destroyed in the Siege of Osaka in the early 1600s and later rebuilt under Tokugawa rule — only to suffer destruction again during the Meiji Restoration and World War II.
Today’s structure is a modern reconstruction from 1931, reinforced with concrete but carefully designed to reflect the original exterior. Inside, the museum displays historical artifacts, samurai armor, weaponry, and vivid dioramas depicting pivotal battles and political shifts during the Sengoku (Warring States) period.
When we finally reached the top, we were rewarded with a panoramic view of Osaka — a sprawling cityscape stretching to the horizon, framed by distant mountains. It was a powerful moment: standing atop a castle that had witnessed centuries of conflict, change, and rebirth, while gazing out at the modern city it helped shape.
