This Memory is on the Blockchain!
This is the spot in South Africa where Gandhi experienced Racism and transformed his Game from living a comfortable life as a Barrister to liberating India and achieving equality. This location is what made him the Legendary Mahatma Gandhi.
Below is an excerpt from Yu-kai Chou's "10,000 Hours of Play":
Imagine a courtroom lawyer so burdened by shyness that he freezes when it’s his turn to speak. His hands tremble, his throat is parched, and his forehead is damp with perspiration—yet he remains silent, not uttering a word. It’s difficult to envision such a person becoming a proficient barrister, much less steering the course of history, isn’t it?"
Believe it or not, there was such a lawyer who ended up becoming one of the most-known figures in the world, noted for his speeches and influence over leaders and the masses. His life changed dramatically when he decided to shift his Life Game’s Mission - from making a good living to freeing a nation.
This lawyer was born in India and then moved to England to study law. His initial Game was simple: earn a decent living, and enjoy a good life in England. Everything he does, therefore, should align with the Objectives of this Game. He decided that his Role (Step 3) in this Game would be a Barrister (like Keanu Reeves’ character in The Devil's Advocate, though I wouldn’t say Keanu Reeves inspired this decision).
However, he may have skipped Step 2 of Identifying his Attributes before committing to Step 3. It turned out that he was incredibly shy and even failed to speak up during his court appearances. After a few failed court Quests (Step 6), his reputation took such a hit that no one in London wanted to hire him anymore. Because of that, he had to press the reset button and start over in a new country where nobody knew who he was. He chose South Africa, hoping for a fresh start.
On his way to South Africa, he faced severe racism, being forced out from his first-class seat. He protested, insisting he had paid for this expensive ticket. But despite his explanations, security ejected him and his luggage off the train at Pietermaritzburg, far from his destination in Pretoria. Instead of feeling demoralized, he took this shameful experience deep in his heart as he began his new Saga in South Africa.
This resilient man is none other than the renowned Pacifist and Strategy Sage Mahatma Gandhi.
Gandhi’s experience of being thrown off the train in such a humiliating manner inspired him to find a new Mission (Game) in life - creating a fair and equal India. This was quite a challenge, considering India was then under British rule and people of color were considered second-class citizens. For most people, pursuing this game would seem insurmountable for the failed lawyer Gandhi in South Africa, as he wouldn't seem to be the right person nor in the right place to accomplish this great Mission.
However, Gandhi, now with his new Game, knew that he could already undertake Quests (Step 6) to advance toward his Game Objectives. He evolved his Role (Step 3) from being a Barrister to an Activist Lawyer.
