People treat Estée Lauder as a Fifth Avenue house that always printed EL after a finished prestige-beauty book.
The November 1995 issuer was The Estée Lauder Companies Inc., still privately held for forty-nine years after Estée Lauder began selling cream in 1946.
The company's investor FAQ states that the Class A common went public on the New York Stock Exchange at 26.00 dollars a share in 1995 currency, 6.50 dollars on a post-split basis. Women's Wear Daily recorded the first print on 17 November 1995.
The issue had been sized at about 14 million shares in a 22-to-24-dollar range. Demand lifted the price to 26 dollars and the count to 15.3 million shares. The company itself sold only 434,734 shares. Family holders sold the rest.
WWD and Reuters both recorded the first NYSE trade at 32.50 dollars and the close at 34.50 dollars on volume of 8.9 million shares, the third-most-active name on the Big Board that session.
Class B shares kept ten votes each. After the sale the family still held more than 97 percent of the voting power.
The mechanism is a dual-class liquidity event, not a control sale. Public holders bought a minority cash claim. The vote stayed in the house that had priced the cream.
The pin is the Broad Street facade of the Exchange. Interior trading is not visitable from the sidewalk.
