People treat Gartner as a Stamford research shop that always printed IT after a finished advisory book.
The October 1993 issuer was Gartner Group, Inc., founded in 1979.
The firm had already listed once, in 1986, then sold to Saatchi and Saatchi in 1988.
A 1990 buyout took it private again, with Dun and Bradstreet and Bain among the backers.
The second public book opened in October 1993.
Market records commonly give 5 October 1993 as the first printed session of that second listing.
Dun and Bradstreet kept about half the shares after the offering.
The name shortened to Gartner, Inc. in November 2001.
The letters IT still print on the New York Stock Exchange.
The mechanism is a second listing after an advertising-group sale and a leveraged take-private, not a first-time cash raise.
The pin is the Broad Street facade of the Exchange on the tape that still carries those letters.
Interior trading is not visitable from the sidewalk.
