People treat Norfolk Southern as an Atlanta railroad house that always printed NSC after a finished New York book.
The June 1982 issuer was Norfolk Southern Corporation, the holding company formed to combine Southern Railway and Norfolk and Western Railway.
The company's own 2012 closing-bell notice records that the common first began trading on the New York Stock Exchange on 2 June 1982 under NSC, one day after the consolidation took effect.
The same notice records that officers presented the exchange president a golden spike used in the advertising that announced the new company.
The present tape is still NSC on the New York Stock Exchange.
The mechanism is a merger listing: two already-public railroads stopped as separate books and a new holding-company tape opened under letters the combined carrier still uses.
The pin is the public Broad Street facade of the 1903 New York Stock Exchange building, the street marker for the tape that first printed NSC.
Interior trading is not visitable from the sidewalk.
