Finance History|11 Wall Street — Fifty Million Shares Leave Prudential as RE

People treat Everest Group as a Bermuda reinsurer that always printed EG after a finished catastrophe book.
The October 1995 issuer was still Prudential Reinsurance Holdings, Inc., a Delaware holding company set up in 1993 over Prudential Reinsurance Company, which had written property and casualty reinsurance since 1973.
The 1998 Form 10-K of the successor states the fact in one sentence. Until 6 October 1995 the company was an indirect wholly owned subsidiary of The Prudential Insurance Company of America. On that date Prudential sold its entire interest, all 50 million outstanding shares, in an initial public offering.
The New York Stock Exchange took the print. The operating company and the holding company were renamed Everest Re the next year, after the mountain. The listed parent later became Everest Re Group, Ltd.
On 10 July 2023, after shareholder approval on 17 May, the parent changed its name to Everest Group, Ltd. and its ticker from RE to EG.
The mechanism is a full parent exit, not a minority float. Prudential sold the whole book onto the tape. Public holders bought a stand-alone reinsurer that had never had a public quote of its own.
The pin is the Broad Street facade of the Exchange. Interior trading is not visitable from the sidewalk.
