Visiting the Statues of Yaji-san and Kita-san at Sanjō Ōhashi Bridge felt like standing at a place where Kyoto’s travel history, literature, and everyday city life meet. The riverside setting was calm and open, with the Kamo River flowing below and the bridge acting as a familiar landmark in the middle of the city.
The statues commemorate Yajirobē and Kitahachi, the two mischievous travelers from Tōkaidōchū Hizakurige (Shank’s Mare), a popular Edo-period humorous travel story that helped make long-distance travel along the Tōkaidō part of the cultural imagination. Their placement at Sanjō Ōhashi is especially meaningful because this bridge marked the western end of the Tōkaidō, making it a symbolic finish line for travelers arriving in Kyoto.
Sanjō Ōhashi itself has deep history: its original construction date is unknown, but records show Toyotomi Hideyoshi ordered repairs in 1590, and some surviving decorative bridge fittings from that era are still associated with it. The current bridge structure dates to 1950, while the statues were added much later as a cultural marker linking the bridge to Kyoto’s merchant roads and travel heritage.
