People treat Entergy as a New Orleans utility that always printed ETR on a finished Big Board book.
The May 1949 issuer was Middle South Utilities, Inc., a New York holding company assembled for Arkansas Power and Light, Louisiana Power and Light, Mississippi Power and Light, and New Orleans Public Service.
Entergy's own history page records that the common stock began trading on the New York Stock Exchange on 31 May 1949. Headquarters that year sat in New York. Edgar Dixon was named the first chief executive.
The same company chronology says the system then served more than 625,000 customers in more than 1,600 communities across Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi.
The mechanism is a Public Utility Holding Company Act reorganization. Electric Bond and Share's Electric Power and Light system had been ordered dissolved. The four operating companies were treated as one integrated southern system and put under a new listed parent instead of remaining inside the old EBASCO structure.
FinanceCharts records the same first-trade date of 31 May 1949. The later ticker is ETR.
On 19 May 1989 shareholders approved changing the parent's name from Middle South Utilities to Entergy Corporation, a composite of enterprise, energy, and synergy. Entergy Mississippi's history page repeats that 1989 rename.
