On October 29, 1988, Sega released the Mega Drive in Japan. Its sound hardware paired a programmable sound generator with Yamaha's YM2612, a six-channel frequency-modulation synthesizer that turned compact music data into audio while a game was running.
That arrangement suited cartridges. Recorded music consumed scarce storage, but an FM chip could build tones from parameters for pitch, envelopes, and modulation, leaving composers to write sequences rather than carry finished recordings.
Yamaha's own history says every Mega Drive contained a YM2612.
The chip came from a longer industrial path. Yamaha had opened an LSI factory at Toyooka for electronic instruments, then began selling tone-generation and signal-processing chips outside the company in 1983.
The Mega Drive converted that musical-instrument knowledge into a component produced for someone else's mass-market machine.
The good was ruthless integration. Unlike the earlier YM2151 arrangement, the YM2612 included its digital-to-analog conversion on the chip, reducing the surrounding parts needed on Sega's board.
Six FM channels could be positioned in stereo, and one channel could trade synthesized output for pulse-code-modulated samples when a game needed a drum hit, voice, or other recorded effect.
The bad was the same fixed budget viewed from the composer's chair. Using the sample mode consumed synthesis capacity, while six channels forced music and effects to compete.
The converter's crossover distortion also gave some quiet sounds a coarse edge. That imperfection became part of the console's recognizable voice, but recognition does not erase the constraint that created it.
Software tools could make the registers easier to use, yet the final result still depended on programmers balancing music, sound effects, processor time, and cartridge space. A famous soundtrack was partly composition and partly resource scheduling.
Toyooka makes the business lesson visible. Yamaha could reuse semiconductor knowledge across keyboards, computers, arcade boards, and consoles, while Sega obtained a mature sound engine without building an audio-chip division.
The partnership spread risk, but it also tied a generation's sound to the limits and quirks of one device.
