Semiconductor History | DAIHEN Juso — A Welding Company Learns to Carry Wafers
kevin
In 2022, DAIHEN's UT-VDW3000 vacuum wafer-transfer robot received the Japan Robot Association Award in the 52nd Industrial Machine Design Awards. The machine represented an unusual extension for an Osaka company historically associated with transformers, welding equipment, and industrial robots.
Inside semiconductor equipment, a robot must move a wafer quickly without scratching it, shaking it, or adding particles. The UT-VDW3000 was designed for vacuum environments and paired high transfer speed with low vibration and precise placement. Those qualities matter because one damaged wafer can contain many expensive chips, while seconds saved in repeated movements can raise the output of an entire tool.
The good outcome was productive diversification. DAIHEN reused motion control, servo systems, robot mechanics, and manufacturing discipline from older industrial businesses in a higher-value clean-production niche. A faster robot can improve fab throughput without requiring a proportional increase in the number of process chambers or factory floor area.
The bad side is that speed does not eliminate systemic risk. A transfer robot must be qualified with a customer's chamber geometry, software, safety system, and maintenance practice. Once installed, switching vendors can be costly, yet the supplier remains exposed when chipmakers postpone capital spending or redesign the equipment around a new wafer process.
Automation also concentrates failure. A human-free vacuum cluster can produce efficiently, but a positioning error, particle source, software fault, or unavailable spare part may stop several linked process modules. Higher speed can amplify damage unless sensing, preventive maintenance, and fault isolation improve with it.
DAIHEN's robot operations are centered in Kobe, so the pictured Juso headquarters should not be mistaken for the UT-VDW3000 production line. The Osaka site is the continuing corporate base from which the company diversified beyond power and welding; that distinction preserves the real geography instead of forcing the robot into the photograph.
