On January 1, 2023, Showa Denko and Showa Denko Materials—the former Hitachi Chemical—completed their reorganization into the Resonac group. The structure paired a listed holding company with an operating company and placed two long Japanese chemical lineages under one new identity.
The semiconductor logic was breadth. Former Showa Denko contributed gases, high-purity chemicals, SiC epitaxial wafers, and other upstream materials, while the Hitachi Chemical lineage brought major positions in packaging, substrate, polishing, and electronic materials.
The good side was co-development across interfaces. Advanced packaging increasingly depends on how several materials behave together, so a supplier spanning front-end and back-end steps can diagnose problems and propose combinations rather than optimize one product in isolation.
Scale also supports global application laboratories and customer service. Those capabilities matter when a new material must be qualified with a chipmaker, equipment vendor, substrate company, and assembler before it earns production revenue.
The merger also preserved knowledge that might otherwise have fragmented as Japanese conglomerates reshaped their portfolios. Yet a new brand does not erase the distinct histories behind each process recipe, patent family, customer approval, and factory quality culture.
The bad side was the price and complexity of consolidation. Showa Denko’s acquisition of Hitachi Chemical increased financial pressure, while the enlarged group had to integrate research priorities, sales channels, quality systems, factories, intellectual property, and corporate cultures.
Breadth can hide weak businesses as easily as it creates synergy. Portfolio sales and restructuring may improve returns, but they can disrupt employees and customers, and a large materials group remains exposed to semiconductor cycles, energy prices, geopolitics, and the bargaining power of a small number of advanced customers.
Resonac moved its combined headquarters to the Tokyo Shiodome Building in July 2023, after the legal integration. The photograph predates that move and shows the same building under a former occupant, Matsushita Electric Works; it is an honest image of the current site, not a picture of the January merger ceremony.
