Biography|Michael Witherell — The Bancroft Street School Where He Finished at Fifteen

People treat a national-lab director as someone who arrived fully formed from a graduate physics department.

The first public building that can be named in Michael Stewart Witherell's record is St. Francis de Sales School, at 2323 West Bancroft Street in Toledo.

He was born in this city on 22 September 1949, one of four sons of Thomas Witherell and Marie Savage Witherell.

The Toledo Blade later recorded that he entered this all-male Catholic preparatory school at eleven and graduated in 1965 as class salutatorian, at fifteen.

The campus opened in 1955 on twenty-five acres, a half-mile from the University of Toledo, in the Diocese of Toledo.

It is still a working school. A 2005 project added a chapel and arts wing. A Student Achievement Center followed in 2012.

A visitor standing on Bancroft now sees that later fabric, not the exact rooms of 1965.

The diploma year is firm. The month of commencement is not in the public sources used here.

Three years later he would take a bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan, at eighteen.

Five years after that, a doctorate in experimental particle physics from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, at twenty-three.

The compressed calendar started on this block.

No private house is pinned. West Toledo residences stay off the map.

The school is the origin that can be stood in without sending a reader to a family door.
