Racing | Formula 1 | 2020 Turkish Grand Prix — Hamilton Secures His Seventh Championship at Istanbul Park

On 15 November 2020, Formula 1 returned to Intercity Istanbul Park for the first time since 2011, with rain falling on a recently resurfaced circuit and turning an already low-grip track into the setting for Lewis Hamilton’s seventh World Drivers’ Championship.

Lance Stroll started from his first Formula 1 pole for Racing Point, ahead of Max Verstappen and Sergio Pérez, while Hamilton lined up sixth and his only remaining title rival, Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas, started ninth after a wet qualifying session.

Hamilton advanced at the start but slid wide at Turn 9, then recovered by conserving one set of intermediate tyres as rivals spun or stopped again, eventually overtaking Pérez for the lead and drawing more than half a minute clear.

The official classification records Hamilton completing all 58 laps in 1 hour 42 minutes 19.313 seconds, with Pérez second at 31.633 seconds and Sebastian Vettel third at 31.960 seconds after Charles Leclerc ran wide during their final-lap fight.

Bottas finished fourteenth, one lap behind, so Hamilton left Istanbul with 307 points to Bottas’s 197 and an insurmountable lead with three races remaining, equalling Michael Schumacher’s then-record total of seven Formula 1 world championships.

The starting grid incorporated power-unit penalties for George Russell and Pierre Gasly, a three-place penalty for Carlos Sainz for impeding Pérez, and five-place penalties for Lando Norris and Russell for yellow-flag infringements, while the final classification records no time penalty or exclusion that altered the podium or championship result.

The race used Istanbul Park’s permanent, anti-clockwise 5.338-kilometre Grand Prix configuration with 14 turns, and the pin marks the circuit complex in Akfırat, Tuzla, rather than an inferred location for any individual on-track incident.
