NFL History | MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford — The Fifty-Degree Rule Was Waived Once

Before the New York and New Jersey bid, the league had a written condition on where its own championship could be played, and it had nothing to do with the merits of a city. Reporting the decision in 2014, the league's own news site described the requirement it had set aside: with no dome, a Super Bowl had to be played in an area where the minimum average temperature was fifty degrees Fahrenheit. That is a threshold, not a preference, and it quietly disqualified most of the league's northern home cities from ever staging its largest event in their own buildings.

On 25 May 2010, at a hotel outside Dallas, the owners waived it for one stadium.

The New York Giants' account of that meeting records four rounds of balloting, against bids from South Florida and Tampa. The first three rounds required a three-quarters majority and produced no winner; the fourth dropped to a simple majority, seventeen of thirty-two. No vote total was ever announced. The same account notes that the owners understood to be against the bid were worried chiefly about the weather, and about what a cold, snowy or icy afternoon would do to the game itself.

Two good sources do not describe the rule identically, and the difference matters. The league's site gives a minimum average temperature of fifty degrees. The Washington Post, reporting from the stadium on the day of the game, describes host cities as needing an average temperature of at least fifty degrees at that time of year. A minimum average and an average are different quantities, and no source consulted for this entry reproduces the bid specification itself. What both agree on is the number, the fact that it operated as a rule, and the fact that the owners set it aside.

This is the vertical's second numeric clause. The other is the post-merger requirement that a home stadium seat more than fifty thousand, which emptied Wrigley Field, War Memorial Stadium and Metropolitan Stadium and filled Soldier Field, and which appears in memories 6687, 6722, 6680 and 6848. The two clauses work the same way and are almost never named together: a number written into league policy, applied without argument, quietly deciding which buildings are eligible for which occasions. The fifty-thousand rule decided where a club could play at all. The fifty-degree rule decided where the season could end.

THE GAME

Super Bowl XLVIII kicked off here at 6:32 in the evening on 2 February 2014, in front of 82,529 people. The Giants' own report of the 2010 vote calls it an 82,500-seat stadium, so the crowd exceeded the building's listed capacity by twenty-nine. That is a full house, and it is also a reminder of how much smaller a modern seating bowl is than the largest Super Bowl crowd on record, which was counted at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena and is the subject of memory 9502. The Washington Post recorded 52 degrees ninety minutes before kickoff and a game-time reading of 49 under clear skies. Snow was in the forecast for the Monday, not the Sunday.

The first play was the one people kept. Twelve seconds in, the Denver centre Manny Ramirez snapped the ball past Peyton Manning, who was still walking up to the line of scrimmage; Knowshon Moreno recovered it in his own end zone for a safety. Pro Football Reference's scoring line puts the play at 14:48 of the first quarter and credits Cliff Avril with the tackle. Denver's own account of the game attributes the miscommunication to crowd noise, on Manning's explanation. Seattle led 2-0 before Denver had run a play from scrimmage and won 43-8.

WHAT THE WAIVER ACTUALLY TESTED

It is tempting to read the 49-degree kickoff as the rule being vindicated or broken by a single degree. It is neither. The rule measured a region's average February temperature, not a thermometer at kickoff, and treating one reading as a verdict on the other is a category error. The honest statement is smaller and stranger: the condition the rule existed to guard against — a championship played in snow, ice or hard cold — did not arrive. The waiver was granted, the game was played in mild weather, and the question the exception was meant to answer went unasked.

STATUS, AS OF 7 SEPTEMBER 2026

Twelve Super Bowls have been played since. Pro Football Reference's index lists them at Glendale, Santa Clara, Houston, Minneapolis, Atlanta, Miami Gardens, Tampa, Inglewood, Glendale again, Las Vegas, New Orleans and Santa Clara again, the last of those on 8 February 2026. Every one of the twelve either had a roof over it or sat in a warm-weather region. Minneapolis is the instructive case: a colder city than East Rutherford, admitted in 2018, with a fixed roof over the field.

The announced future sites are SoFi Stadium in 2027, Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta in 2028, Allegiant Stadium in 2029 and a new Nissan Stadium in Nashville in 2030, the last announced in May 2026. Nashville did not need an exception. The Titans' own stadium information page states that the new building is enclosed and that its roof will not be retractable, a choice the club explains by pointing to the light use and mechanical cost of retractable roofs elsewhere. That is the pattern in both directions: the two northern or inland cities admitted since the waiver, Minneapolis in 2018 and Nashville in 2030, each arrived with a roof over the field rather than with a second exception. Nashville's previous professional ground appears in this project at 9530.

Two explanations circulate for why the exception has not recurred, and they are not the same explanation. Mark Murphy, then the Green Bay Packers' president, told the league's news site it was a one-time exception. Roger Goodell, per the Washington Post, pointed instead to the other host requirements — hotel capacity among them — that would limit which cold cities could realistically bid at all. One account says the league chose not to repeat it. The other says few cold cities could qualify in any case. This entry does not resolve them.

THE GROUND, AND THE GROUND NEXT DOOR

This is not the building in memory 9304. Giants Stadium's pin sits roughly 265 metres to the south-west of the coordinate below; the two stadiums stood on adjacent ground in the Meadowlands sports complex, not on the same footprint, and a reader who treats the older pin as this stadium lands a stadium's width away. The stadium opened for the 2010 season and is shared by the Giants and the Jets, who built it as partners.

COORDINATE

Pinned at 40.813611, -74.074444, Wikidata's P625 value for MetLife Stadium. OpenStreetMap returns 40.813507, -74.074344, about 14 metres away; Wikidata and OSM are not fully independent for this class of feature, so that agreement is a consistency check rather than a second method. The United States Census TIGER geocoder returned no match for the stadium's street address, the same failure this project met at the United States Capitol. Forty Wikimedia Commons files within 300 metres carry photographer coordinates, and they scatter across roughly 80 metres of the seating bowl — a weak third check, being a cloud of camera positions rather than a surveyed point. The bowl is on the order of 250 metres across, so the honest radius for its centre is plus or minus 60 metres.
