Biography|Jean-Philippe Imparato — Born in This Canal Town, Not in a Car Plant

People treat a later Peugeot and Alfa Romeo chief as someone who must have grown up next to a factory gate.

Jean-Philippe Imparato was born on 27 August 1966 in Sète, the canal port on the Étang de Thau in the Hérault.

French and Italian biographical notices agree on the town and the full date.

The family house is not a public site, so this pin sits at the Hôtel de Ville at 8 rue Paul Valéry rather than at a private door.

The building itself is older than the republic that uses it. The commune acquired the house in the early eighteenth century and still conducts business behind the balcony on the street.

His father, Georges, worked as a jeweller. His mother taught school.

A local profile published when he already ran Peugeot describes a household that spent weekends around engines and trial 4x4s rather than around a plant clock.

A brother later said the father had passed on the car habit and that the mother had imagined a courtroom instead.

He took a baccalauréat A in Sète with mention très bien and left at seventeen for a commerce school in Grenoble.

The Italian grandfather is the origin he later named when Stellantis sent him to Alfa Romeo. Several Italian notices place that grandfather in Gaeta, in Lazio. One later profile put the family in Apulia. The two claims are not the same place, and the civic record in Sète does not settle them.

Nothing in that record makes this city hall the birth room. It is the public address of the commune that registered him.

The visitor who wants the port rather than the plaque should walk two minutes to the canals. The hill behind the town is Mont Saint-Clair.

Sète is a working harbour first. The later career in Paris, Wuhan and Arese starts from a town that builds boats and salt, not cars.
