On 20 October 2017 Tim Cook stood on Pioneer Court and opened a new Apple Store at 401 North Michigan Avenue.
The limestone shop at 679, six blocks north, had closed the night before.
Foster + Partners designed a two-level glass pavilion that drops from the plaza to the Chicago River.
Doors opened at 5 p.m.
Cook greeted the first people in line.
Governor Bruce Rauner was there.
Saba played on the court.
Angela Ahrendts, then head of retail, walked the floor with Karlie Kloss.
The city had worked with Apple on a stair that reconnects Michigan Avenue to the riverwalk, on ground that once held Jean Baptiste Point du Sable's settlement.
The building cost about 27 million dollars.
It was sold as the first of a new generation of flagships.
A visitor still crosses Pioneer Court, looks through the glass at the Wrigley Building, and walks down to the water.
