Racing | Formula 1 | 2024 British Grand Prix — Hamilton Wins a Record Ninth Time at Silverstone

On 7 July 2024, Lewis Hamilton lined up second at Silverstone beside Mercedes teammate and pole-sitter George Russell, with Lando Norris third, giving British drivers the first three grid positions for their home Grand Prix.

Hamilton arrived without a victory since the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix on 5 December 2021, a span of 945 days and 56 races that had followed the most successful winning record in Formula 1 history.

Russell led the opening laps, but the race changed as rain swept across the 5.891-kilometre circuit: Hamilton moved ahead on lap 18, Norris took the lead on lap 20, and the front-runners switched to intermediate tyres as conditions worsened.

When the track dried, Hamilton and Max Verstappen stopped on lap 38 for slick tyres—Hamilton choosing softs and Verstappen hards—while Norris stayed out for one more lap and rejoined behind the Mercedes after his stop.

Verstappen passed Norris at Stowe with four laps remaining and closed on Hamilton, but Hamilton controlled the final laps to win the 52-lap race in 1:22:27.059, 1.465 seconds ahead of Verstappen; Norris finished third, 7.547 seconds behind the winner.

The victory was Hamilton’s 104th in Formula 1 and his ninth British Grand Prix win at Silverstone, making him the first driver in World Championship history to win nine races at a single circuit; it also made him the first driver to win in 16 different Formula 1 seasons.

Pierre Gasly had been assigned to the back of the grid for exceeding his power-unit allocation, while Sergio Pérez started from the pit lane after parc-fermé changes and additional power-unit elements; the FIA’s final classification preserves Hamilton, Verstappen and Norris as the podium.
