[U2’s official PopMart archive](https://www.u2.com/blogs/popmart-leg-2-1997-europe) dates the band’s Belfast Botanic Gardens concert to August 26, 1997. A [contemporary RTÉ News report](https://www.rte.ie/archives/2017/0826/899379-u2-popmart-comes-to-belfast/) documented the conversion behind that date: 500 road crew had spent five days erecting the touring stage and set in the public gardens, where RTÉ expected 40,000 people that evening.
The park mattered because PopMart’s stadium-scale system had to become a temporary urban venue rather than occupy a permanent bowl. [Belfast City Council](https://www.belfastcity.gov.uk/botanicgardens) identifies Botanic Gardens as a concert and festival site with access from Stranmillis Embankment. In a contemporary Irish Times report [preserved by U2Station](https://www.u2station.com/tours/1997/08/august-26-1997---belfast-northern-ireland---botanic-gardens.php), Bono said cooperation in Belfast had made the show easier to assemble than the Dublin dates. That is the performer’s account of the operation, not a measure of the performance itself.
The political timing was real but should not be exaggerated. The [CAIN conflict archive](https://cain.ulster.ac.uk/events/peace/docs/ira20797.htm) records the IRA ceasefire taking effect on July 20, 1997, 37 days before the concert. RTÉ reported the Lord Mayor calling the timing opportune. The sources establish that a large temporary concert was mounted during a fragile ceasefire; they do not establish that the event caused or represented political agreement.
**Coordinate method and precision:** The pin at 54.580620, -5.932350 marks the lower Botanic Gardens concert grounds, not a documented 1997 stage, gate, or crowd boundary. It reconciles the [OpenStreetMap-derived park centre](https://mapcarta.com/25583150) with [Wikidata’s Botanic Gardens coordinate](https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q3115229), about 166 metres apart. A ±350-metre radius honestly covers the elongated park and the uncertainty in the historical event footprint.
