On 19 July 2008 Apple opened store 219, and its first in China, at Sanlitun Village in Beijing.
Doors opened at 10 a.m.
About 400 people were in line. Some had waited overnight.
Ron Johnson, head of retail, had previewed the shop two days earlier and said it was the first of many in the country.
Jobs was not in the queue.
The two-level glass box sat in Building 6 of what is now Taikoo Li Sanlitun South, at 19 Sanlitun Road, Chaoyang.
Genius Bar staff spoke Chinese and English.
There was no iPhone on the tables. Apple had not yet signed a mainland carrier.
The Beijing Games would open three weeks later.
The original shop closed on the evening of 15 July 2020.
A larger Foster + Partners store opened next door in Building 7 on 17 July, with a solar array on the glass.
The pin is the 2008 corner in Taikoo Li South, not the 2020 pavilion.
