On 30 November 2003 Apple opened its 73rd store, and its first outside the United States, in the Sayegusa building at 3-5-12 Ginza.
Doors opened at 10 a.m. in the rain.
About 7,000 people came through that day, more than Chicago's North Michigan Avenue had drawn in June.
Five floors. A Genius Bar of about eight metres. A theatre. Software shelves. An internet cafe with AirPort.
Steve Cano, the store's first manager, shook hands at the door.
Japanese accounts of the morning put Steve Jobs in Ginza for the opening.
He had argued for a street where people who did not already own a Mac would walk past, not a specialist electronics district.
The building later came down.
The store moved to Ginza 8-chome in August 2022 while the site was rebuilt, and returned to 3-5-12 on 26 September 2025.
The pin is the original corner, one minute from Ginza Station, not the temporary shop.
A visitor now walks into a new lattice on the same lot.
