Racing | Formula 1 | 2020 Italian Grand Prix — Gasly Wins His First Grand Prix at Monza

On 6 September 2020, Pierre Gasly won the Italian Grand Prix at Autodromo Nazionale Monza, giving Scuderia AlphaTauri its first Formula 1 victory and earning the 24-year-old French driver his first Grand Prix win.

Gasly started tenth in the AlphaTauri-Honda after qualifying in 1:20.177, while Lewis Hamilton led the grid from Valtteri Bottas and Carlos Sainz.

Gasly stopped for tyres on lap 19, one lap before Kevin Magnussen’s stranded Haas triggered a safety-car period and the pit lane was closed.

Hamilton and Antonio Giovinazzi nevertheless entered the closed pit lane, and each received a ten-second stop-and-go penalty.

Charles Leclerc’s crash at the Parabolica damaged the tyre barrier and brought a red flag, producing a second standing start on lap 28 of the scheduled 53.

Hamilton led that restart but served his penalty at the end of the lap, while Gasly passed Lance Stroll, inherited the lead, and then defended it as Sainz closed in through the final laps.

Gasly crossed the line in 1:47:06.056, only 0.415 seconds ahead of Sainz’s McLaren-Renault, with Stroll’s Racing Point-Mercedes third at 3.358 seconds.

Alexander Albon also received a five-second penalty for forcing Romain Grosjean off the track, but that sanction did not affect the podium.

The victory made Gasly the first French Formula 1 winner since Olivier Panis at Monaco in 1996 and gave the Faenza-based team its second Monza triumph after Sebastian Vettel won here for Toro Rosso in 2008.

The 2020 race used Monza’s 5.793-kilometre modern Grand Prix circuit, an 11-turn clockwise layout inside the Royal Park, with the opening Rettifilo chicane, the two Lesmo curves, Variante Ascari, and the high-speed Parabolica defining the lap.
