Biography | Tim Cook — He Unveiled a Headset You Look Through in the Theater Named for Jobs

On 5 June 2023 Tim Cook closed the WWDC keynote in the Steve Jobs Theater with a device that was not a phone, a watch, or a computer as the company had sold them.

Apple Vision Pro was priced at $3,499 and scheduled for early 2024.

It ran visionOS.

It used an M2 chip and a second chip Apple called R1.

Control was by eyes, hands, and voice.

Each display, Apple said, carried more pixels than a 4K television.

Press in the room were allowed to handle units after the talk.

Developers watched from the campus and from a livestream.

The first special event in this glass cylinder had been Cook's iPhone X morning on 12 September 2017.

This was the first time the theater launched a new product category.

Bob Iger of Disney appeared in the keynote to talk about films and sports inside the headset.

The same two hours also brought iOS 17, a 15-inch MacBook Air, and the M2 Ultra.

The theater sits on the Apple Park campus at the public edge of the ring.

It opened in 2017 and holds about a thousand people.

A visitor can stand at the Visitor Center across the street and see the carbon-fiber roof.

The auditorium itself opens only when Apple unlocks it.

U.S. sales of Vision Pro began on 2 February 2024.
