On 27 June 2003 Apple opened a three-floor store at 679 North Michigan Avenue.
Doors opened at 6 p.m.
About 3,000 people came through that evening, a record that Ginza would break five months later.
The building had been a Gap.
Bohlin Cywinski Jackson punched an apple-shaped window through Indiana limestone.
Inside: a 40-foot Genius Bar, a 48-seat theatre, a studio over a green roof, and the first Internet cafe in an Apple Store, with 16 Macs.
Jobs called Michigan Avenue one of the best shopping streets in the country.
He was not required to be on the sidewalk for the quote to be true.
The first 1,000 through the door received a shirt.
A DJ played off an iPod.
This was Apple's first Chicago store and its largest U.S. shop at the time, after SoHo.
The last day at 679 was 19 October 2017.
On 20 October the company opened a glass pavilion at 401 North Michigan, on Pioneer Court by the river.
The pin is the limestone facade, now a different tenant.
