Racing | Formula 1 | 2013 Indian Grand Prix — Vettel Secures His Fourth Consecutive Title at Buddh

On 27 October 2013, Sebastian Vettel won the Indian Grand Prix at Buddh International Circuit in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh, securing his fourth consecutive Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship and helping Infiniti Red Bull Racing clinch a fourth straight Constructors’ Championship.

Vettel started from pole in the Red Bull-Renault after qualifying in 1:24.119, with Nico Rosberg’s Mercedes second, Lewis Hamilton third, and team-mate Mark Webber fourth.

Because Vettel had qualified on the faster but short-lived soft tyre, he stopped at the end of lap two, rejoined seventeenth, and began working back through traffic while Webber pursued the opposing strategy from the medium compound.

Vettel regained control after the strategic cycle, made his final stop on lap 32, and led by 12.7 seconds once Webber completed his second stop, before Webber retired with an alternator problem.

After 60 laps, Vettel finished in 1:31:12.187, 29.823 seconds ahead of Rosberg, while Romain Grosjean rose from seventeenth on the grid to third, 39.892 seconds behind the winner, with a one-stop tyre strategy.

Fernando Alonso, Vettel’s only remaining championship rival, finished eleventh and scored no points, making Vettel champion with three races still to run.

The result gave the 26-year-old German his fourth Drivers’ Championship in succession, a sequence previously achieved only by Juan Manuel Fangio and Michael Schumacher, while Red Bull completed the same four-year run in the Constructors’ Championship.

On the cooling-down lap, Vettel diverted to the start-finish straight, performed celebratory doughnuts before the main grandstand, and left his car there rather than proceeding directly to parc fermé.

The stewards issued Vettel a reprimand and fined Red Bull €25,000 for the post-race procedure breach, without changing the final classification.

The race used Buddh’s 2011–2022 Grand Prix configuration, a clockwise layout of 16 turns officially measured for the event at 5.125 kilometres from start line to start line, with 60 laps producing a scheduled distance of 307.249 kilometres.
