On 19 May 2001 Apple opened its second store of the day at the Glendale Galleria.
Tysons Corner in Virginia had already unlocked that morning, three hours ahead on the clock.
Glendale was store R001 on the planning list: the first bay the retail team designed, even if Virginia beat it to the door.
The address is still 2126 Glendale Galleria, on the second floor, across from what later became a cosmetics counter and a Lego shop.
Jobs had announced both openings four days earlier.
He walked reporters through the Virginia store.
He was not on this mall floor when the West Coast line went in.
The two shops together saw more than 7,700 visitors and about $600,000 in sales that first weekend.
In 2011 Apple opened a second Glendale store at The Americana at Brand, about 500 feet away.
R001 stayed in the Galleria.
A visitor still rides the mall escalator; there is no cube and no street facade.
