Racing | Formula 1 | 2014 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix — Hamilton Secures His Second Championship at Yas Marina

On 23 November 2014, Lewis Hamilton won the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at Yas Marina Circuit on Yas Island, securing his second Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship and his first with Mercedes.

Nico Rosberg started from pole in the Mercedes after qualifying in 1:40.480, with Hamilton second, Valtteri Bottas third, and Felipe Massa fourth.

Hamilton launched ahead of Rosberg before the first corner and controlled the early phase. Rosberg remained within two seconds until his energy-recovery system failed on lap 24; other systems and his rear brakes then deteriorated, dropping him through the field.

Massa briefly led after Hamilton’s second stop and switched to the supersoft tyre on lap 43. He closed the gap, but Hamilton preserved enough pace to keep the Williams behind.

After 55 laps, Hamilton finished in 1:39:02.619, 2.576 seconds ahead of Massa. Bottas completed a Williams double podium in third, 28.880 seconds behind the winner, while Daniel Ricciardo finished fourth after starting from the pit lane.

Rosberg continued to the flag in fourteenth, one lap down. Hamilton therefore ended the season with 384 points to Rosberg’s 317, becoming world champion for the second time, six years after his first title.

The race was the only Formula 1 World Championship round ever run under the double-points rule: Hamilton received 50 points for victory, Massa 36, and Bottas 30. The enlarged allocation did not alter the identity of the champion.

Before the race, the stewards excluded Ricciardo and Sebastian Vettel from qualifying because both Red Bull front wings breached the technical regulations. After the team replaced the wings under parc fermé, both cars were required to start from the pit lane; the final podium was unchanged.

The race used Yas Marina’s original 2009–2020 Grand Prix configuration, a counter-clockwise layout of 21 turns measuring 5.554 kilometres. Fifty-five laps produced a scheduled distance of 305.355 kilometres, beginning in daylight and finishing under floodlights.
