On 10 July 2010 Apple opened store 295 in the sunken plaza of Shanghai IFC, Lujiazui.
A glass cylinder about twelve metres high stands in the water and drops a spiral stair to 1,500 square metres underground.
It was the third store built this way, after Fifth Avenue and the Louvre.
Doors opened at 10 a.m.
About 150 people had waited overnight. Some had flown in.
They hoped for Jobs or for an iPhone 4. They got a shirt.
Ron Johnson, head of retail, had said the cylinder was inspired by the New York cube and fitted to this skyline, with the Oriental Pearl Tower in view.
Jobs was not in the plaza.
This was China's second Apple Store, sixteen months after Sanlitun, and Shanghai's first.
A visitor still walks down through the glass into the IFC court.
