Concert History | Rolling Stones at MGM Grand Garden Arena — A Stadium-Scale Bridge Stayed Off the Arena Floor

On November 22, 1997, the Rolling Stones brought the Bridges to Babylon Tour into the MGM Grand Garden Arena for the tour’s first indoor show. That change of room mattered. The production had been designed around stadium distances, but Las Vegas required a smaller version rather than a simple roofed copy of the outdoor show.

Dean Goodman’s contemporaneous [Reuters review](https://iorr.org/rew97/vegas.htm), preserved by IORR with its byline, records a scaled-down stage, minimal pyrotechnics and—most consequentially—no retractable bridge. The band still moved to a secondary stage for three numbers, but did so without the touring machine that normally carried the transition across a stadium field. [Billboard’s December 13, 1997 Boxscore](https://books.google.com/books?id=3gkEAAAAMBAJ&pg=PA19) independently records the exact Las Vegas engagement and reports 12,750 tickets sold from 12,750 available; that is a ticket count, not a turnstile estimate.

The reason the omission mattered becomes clear in Catherine McHugh’s detailed [Live Design production account](https://www.livedesignonline.com/bridges-to-babylon-rolling-stones-tour-connects-stadium-rock-to-operatic-extravagance). Set architect Mark Fisher described the bridge as truly stadium-scale. It extended about 36 metres from a main stage roughly 60 metres long to a six-metre-square secondary platform, then retracted beneath the main stage. At MGM, the secondary performance point survived while the bridge and much of the outdoor spectacle did not. The session shows arena adaptation as subtraction: the live format was preserved by removing the hardware that depended on a field-sized gap.

The precision radius is 90 metres: it covers the arena footprint, not an undocumented 1997 stage position.
