On 20 September 2019 Tim Cook opened the doors of the glass cube at 767 Fifth Avenue at 8 a.m.
The store under the cube had been closed since January 2017.
Foster + Partners and Jony Ive rebuilt the rooms below from scratch. Nearly twice the floor. A stainless-steel spiral of 43 treads. Sixty-two circular skylights in the plaza.
iPhone 11 went on sale that morning.
Cook flew in from Cupertino, high-fived the first people in line, and took photographs.
Jobs had opened the first cube here on 19 May 2006 and kept it open all night.
This is the same pin and a different morning.
The rainbow film on the glass had already come off.
A visitor still drops through the cube into the plaza that never closes.
