During the concert, Bono used a telephone to order 10,000 pizzas from Speedy Pizza. A contemporary Associated Press dispatch reported what happened next: three employees brought 100 pizzas to the stage; space was cleared, a spotlight picked out the delivery, and boxes were passed into the audience. The point is not the oversized order. Auburn Hills shows how Zoo TV’s telephone could make the city outside the arena part of a live production. A commercial call became an arrival route, stage clearance, lighting cue, and crowd-distribution problem inside the same performance. The stunt depended on a local business reaching the building and the show absorbing the result in real time.
