Racing | Formula 1 | 2016 Spanish Grand Prix — Verstappen Becomes the Youngest Winner at Barcelona

Max Verstappen arrived at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya for the 15 May 2016 Spanish Grand Prix only days after Red Bull promoted him from Scuderia Toro Rosso, then qualified fourth for his first race with Red Bull Racing TAG Heuer behind Lewis Hamilton, Nico Rosberg and new teammate Daniel Ricciardo.

The race’s expected Mercedes contest vanished on the opening lap when Rosberg, running in an incorrect engine mode after taking the lead, defended against Hamilton on the approach to Turn 4 and Hamilton spun from the grass into his teammate; both cars retired, and the stewards took no further action after reviewing the collision.

Ricciardo initially led Verstappen, but Red Bull and Ferrari split their cars between three-stop and two-stop strategies as Sebastian Vettel’s pace threatened the lead, leaving Verstappen and Kimi Räikkönen at the front with one long final stint remaining.

Verstappen made his final set of medium tyres last 32 laps while Räikkönen pressed within a second through the closing stages, yet the Ferrari could not get close enough through the final sector to pass on the main straight.

After 66 laps, Verstappen won in 1:41:40.017, just 0.616 seconds ahead of Räikkönen, with Vettel third at 5.581 seconds and Ricciardo fourth after a late puncture.

At 18 years and 228 days, Verstappen became the youngest Formula 1 Grand Prix winner, the first Dutch driver to win a world-championship Grand Prix, and a winner on his debut for Red Bull.

The final classification includes a 10-second post-race penalty for Kevin Magnussen after the stewards held him responsible for contact with Renault teammate Jolyon Palmer on the final lap, dropping Magnussen from fourteenth to fifteenth without affecting the podium.
