Biography|Stephen J. Adler — Reuters Made Him Editor-in-Chief at 3 Times Square

On 7 February 2011 Thomson Reuters chief executive Tom Glocer told staff that Stephen J. Adler was editor-in-chief of Reuters News and executive vice president for news, effective that day.

He succeeded David Schlesinger, who moved to chair Thomson Reuters China. Adler had joined the company in January 2010 to run editorial for the Professional Division.

The newsroom sat in 3 Times Square, the thirty-storey tower Fox and Fowle designed for Reuters at Seventh Avenue between 42nd and 43rd Streets. The building opened in 2001.

City records and the building's own later name still call it the Thomson Reuters Building.

That is the pin. A public Times Square front, not a private desk.

He held the job for a decade. On 6 January 2021 Reuters reported his retirement, effective 1 April.

The company's own story said the newsroom had taken seven Pulitzer Prizes under him. Later biographies at Columbia Journalism School and the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press raised the count to eight.

The two figures are both in circulation; the 2021 memo is the contemporaneous company number.

The same years included the 2017 arrest in Myanmar of two Reuters reporters who had been investigating killings in Rakhine State. They spent more than 500 days in prison before release.

Adler's public role in that case is on the Reuters record from 2018 onward.

A visitor to the southwest corner of 42nd and Seventh still sees the curved glass base and the Reuters name on the shaft. The company later renovated the interior.

The address did not move.
