After the trays and the metal detector, most Japanese airports cut the last conversation.

At Miyazaki Bougainvillea Airport they did not.

On the second floor a pane of glass still separates the departure lounge from the people who came to see someone off.

On each side sits a handset that is not a mobile phone. You pick it up. The person on the other side of the glass picks up the twin.

You can see the face. You can hear the voice. You cannot touch.

The airport’s own pages date the first such booth to around 1975, when this field was still the old terminal.

Later reporting, including features that quote airport-building staff, puts the corner travelers use today at 1983, ahead of other Japanese airports.

Miyazaki sits close to the city. Families drive a short stretch of road and stay until the last call.

That is why the glass is there.

Spring departure days still produce a line. A graduate bound for Aichi. A grandson going back to work. Friends who will not share a classroom again.

They say the ordinary sentences. Eat properly. Call if something happens. Come back to Miyazaki.

The analog handset survived the smartphone because the point was never the device.

It was the last unhurried look across a barrier that security otherwise makes final.

Other regional airports later copied the idea — Akita, Hakodate and Noto among them.

The original remains here, under the bougainvillea that gives the airport its nickname.

Stand on either side of the glass and the scene is the same as it was forty years ago: two people, one pane, a few minutes before the jet bridge.
