Biography | Tan Su Shan — The Istana Grounds Where She Received an NMP Instrument

Banking profiles compress Tan Su Shan’s public life into DBS titles.

A separate civic appointment sits on the Istana grounds.

On 9 February 2012 President Tony Tan Keng Yam presented instruments of appointment to nine Nominated Members of Parliament.

Channel NewsAsia named the nine that day: Faizah Haji Ahmad Jamal, Nicholas Fang, Janice Koh, Laurence Lien, Mary Liew, R. Dhinakaran, Eugene Tan, Tan Su Shan and Teo Siong Seng.

Eight were new to the House.

Teo was serving a second term.

The ceremony was at the Istana, the president’s official residence and office on Orchard Road, not in the chamber itself.

The nine took their oaths at the next sitting of Parliament on 14 February 2012.

That sitting opened the 12th Parliament’s first NMP cohort, which ran until 13 August 2014.

Nominated Members are appointed under the Constitution to bring non-partisan voices into a one-house legislature.

They are not constituency MPs.

The NMP scheme dates from 1990.

A DBS newsroom note issued when she became deputy chief executive recorded the 2012–14 term among her outside posts.

The pin is the Istana main building, a gazetted national monument completed in 1869 as Government House.

The grounds open to the public only on listed days.

Visitors should follow posted hours and not treat the forecourt as a workplace tour.

This memory is the appointment, not the later debates in Parliament House.
