Someday or One Day | Qigu Seawall Sunset Trail — One Kilometre of Ordinary Happiness

The 2022 film gives Li Zi-wei and Huang Yu-hsuan a date at the sea, and it puts them on a dike path in Qigu — a kilometre of flat brick and asphalt along the top of a seawall, about half an hour there and back. After everything the loop has done to these two, the film's idea of a reward is a walk with no destination.

The geography is worth understanding before you go. On one side is the Qigu lagoon, shallow and stubbled with oyster racks on bamboo poles. On the other are abandoned salt evaporation pans, laid out in a grid that no longer does anything. You walk the ridge between a working fishery and a dead industry.

Halfway along there is a three-storey observation tower looking out to the barrier sandbars — Wangziliao among them — where cormorants overwinter in numbers. The path runs past a coast guard checkpoint, and the concrete sentry posts and a machine-gun pillbox from the coastal-defence years are still standing in the wall. Taiwan's westernmost point and its lighthouse are close by.

It is open, free and unenclosed, and it is completely exposed and unlit. Do not plan to be out there after dark. The scenic area administration has had storm-damage repair notices posted on the observation tower, so check before you count on climbing it.

Go for the last hour of daylight, which is what the trail is named for. The sun goes down over the lagoon and the oyster racks turn into black lines on orange water, and there is nothing to do out there except keep walking and talk to whoever came with you. That is precisely what the film wanted.
