Someday or One Day | Anping Old Fort — The Big Brother Who Walked Her Home

A six-year-old gets lost in Tainan and a kind older boy walks her home. She remembers his face for the rest of her life without ever knowing why it matters. That is the memory 想見你 spends thirteen episodes detonating, and Tainan City's own filming location release names this fort and the streets around it as where the childhood scenes were shot.

The boy is Li Zi-wei. He is not a stranger being kind. He already knows exactly who she is, because he has arrived here from further along the loop, and the child holding his hand will not understand that for another twenty years. Watch the scene again and it stops being sweet.

The fort itself is four hundred years of overwriting. The only genuinely Dutch fabric left is a seventy-metre run of the outer south wall — mottled red brick laid in a mortar of oyster-shell lime, sugar water and glutinous rice, with old banyan roots poured down over it and grown into the joints. Put your hand flat on it: root and brick are the same temperature. Everything white on the site is 1975 paint over a Japanese-era rebuild, and the pointed observation tower glares hard enough in afternoon sun to hurt.

You are two streets from the harbour, so the air is brackish, and the hawker noise off Anping Old Street comes over the wall constantly.

Seventy NT dollars, thirty-five concession, free for Tainan residents. Hours differ between the city's own two sources; the Cultural Affairs Bureau says half past eight to half past five.

Find the banyan wall and stand with your back to the white tower. Behind you is the version of the fort that was rebuilt for visitors. In front of you is the only part that was here when any of it started. The drama is about the same problem.
