Someday or One Day | Anping Old Street — White Sugar Cake and a Cup of Winter Melon Tea

The Tainan City Government's own release names the snack: white sugar cake, glutinous rice deep-fried and rolled in fine sugar and a little peanut powder, eaten with a cold winter melon tea. It is what Li Zi-wei and small Huang Yu-hsuan always stop for while they walk around Anping.

He is not being spontaneous. He has done this walk before, from the other end of the loop, and he knows exactly what she likes because he has known her for years she has not lived yet. The scene plays as a kind older boy indulging a child. It is a man visiting a memory while standing inside it.

The street is the oldest in Taiwan, laid out by the Dutch for people on foot and handcarts, so it narrows to two or three metres and the shop awnings almost close overhead. Look up at the roof ridges for the wind lion gods, and above the door lintels for the sword lions — Anping's household guardians, and specific to this district rather than generic temple decoration. The side alleys have proper names: Jasmine Lane, Rouge Lane. There is a surviving old well on the street, and an exposed fragment of the Dutch townscape wall.

Buy the white sugar cake. Eat it hot, walking, before the sugar melts into the oil — that is a two-minute window and it is the entire point of the food. She is six years old and she has no idea who is buying it for her.
