Someday or One Day | Linfongying Station — The Platform Where Mo Jun-jie Let Her Go

The 2022 film puts its farewell here. Mo Jun-jie sees Chen Yun-ru off from a small wooden station in the middle of Tainan's dairy country, and then stands on the platform after the train has gone, which is the part that hurts.

The station house dates from 1933 and it is one of a handful of Japanese-era timber stations still standing in Taiwan, a sibling to Houbi up the line. Dark-stained boards, a hipped roof, a ticket window at chest height, bench timber worn pale in the places where hips have sat for ninety years. It has been a registered historic building since 2005.

Only local trains stop here. About a thousand people a day use it, which puts it near the bottom of the national table, and that is why it works on film. The platform sits in long dead silences, and then an express comes through without stopping and hits you with a slam of air and noise and is gone, and the silence closes back over. A farewell scene needs exactly that rhythm and no set designer can build it.

Outside there is a roundabout, a few YouBike docks, three feeder bus routes and flat dairy farmland in every direction. This is the milk-brand country the station lent its name to.

The station is open and free to approach; you need a ticket to go onto the platform. Trains are infrequent, so check the timetable before you build a day around it.

Stand at the north end of the platform and wait for one express to pass. Count the seconds until the sound is completely gone. The film gives Jun-jie about that long, and then it cuts.
