Japan Places|宮崎ブーゲンビリア空港 — A Hundred Pots That Never All Fade at Once

The nickname is not a metaphor. The lobby is full of pots.

About a hundred bougainvillea stand in the terminal at any one time. They bloom for roughly a month, then they are swapped. A greenhouse near the field holds about two thousand more, fed and timed so the public rooms never go bare.

The airport building company has run that house for more than twenty years. The habit goes back further, to Shotaro Iwakiri, first president of the company and the man who planted phoenix palms along the Nichinan coast. In the 1980s he saw bougainvillea in Okinawa and wanted the same colour at the gate.

On 1 October 2014, the airport's sixtieth year, the field took the name Miyazaki Bougainvillea Airport. A year later a new cultivar found here was registered as Elizabeth Angus Shotaro.

In winter the pink is still on the planters. That is the point of the greenhouse. A flower that drops in a month is made continuous by labour, not by climate.
