Concert History | Madonna at Dübendorf Airfield — 130 Extra Trains Turned an Air Base into a Concert Ground

On 30 August 2008, Madonna’s first concert in Switzerland put the Sticky & Sweet production on the open ground of Militärflugplatz Dübendorf, east of Zürich. The scale was not inferred from the tour’s reputation: trade paper Pollstar reported that promoter Good News confirmed a turnout of 72,000 and called it a Swiss concert attendance record. The same report said more than 60,000 tickets moved in two and a half hours and that producing the event cost CHF 13 million. The venue made that scale possible. On the eve of the show, SWI swissinfo.ch described the 265-hectare airfield as the largest Swiss area then available for events of this kind. Its report identified the exact date, the historic military-airfield setting, and Madonna’s 250-person touring crew. The runway complex offered room that an arena could not, but it also shifted the problem from seating to moving a temporary city in and out. The transport plan was built into admission. The post-event count shows what that integration accomplished. Good News told SWI that only 2,000 cars reached the venue and that the great majority of the audience used those 130 extra trains. This was therefore not simply a stadium-sized performance placed on a runway: the ticket, the rail timetable, and the airfield footprint worked as one temporary venue system. A Swiss Air Force aerodrome guide gives LSMD as 47°23.9′ N, 8°38.9′ E, while Wikidata independently places Dübendorf Air Base at 47°24′13.194″ N, 8°37′56.654″ E, about 1.32 kilometres northwest. The ±1.6-kilometre precision radius covers the long runway and event grounds while honestly preserving uncertainty about the 2008 stage.
