On 18 October 1989, the Los Angeles Times reported that the Rolling Stones would open the first of four nights at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum that evening. Living Colour was scheduled for 6 p.m., Guns N' Roses for 7:30 and the Stones around 9; the same bill would return Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1989-10-18-ca-389-story.html
The Coliseum's own history also records four October shows by the Rolling Stones with Guns N' Roses and Living Colour. The booking mattered because the stadium was not simply hosting a touring act for one night: promoters were converting one enormous open-air bowl into a four-date Los Angeles residency. https://www.lacoliseum.com/timeline/the-rolling-stones-steel-wheels-tour-with-guns-n-roses-and-living-colour/
The local support act was part of that sales architecture. In a 15 October Times preview, an unnamed concert producer argued that Guns N' Roses guaranteed a third date and enabled a fourth after the Who had failed to sell out even one Coliseum show that August. Stones business manager and tour producer Joseph Rascoff rejected the idea that the band was added as “insurance,” calling it “the icing on the cake.” The disagreement is useful: both accounts treat the triple bill as a deliberate way to make a four-night stadium booking work, even if they differ over how necessary it was. https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1989-10-15-ca-474-story.html
After the engagement, the Times reported a final total of 301,569 released by promoter Avalon Attractions for the four sold-out dates. It called this only the second Coliseum concert run to exceed 300,000, behind Bruce Springsteen's four 1985 shows at about 320,000. The paper also noted that the Stones' elaborate stage and sound equipment reduced usable concert capacity. https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1989-10-30-ca-9-story.html
That 301,569 is the promoter-released total for the whole four-date engagement—not an attendance figure for 18 October alone. This memory is pinned to the opening night because it began the run; the later three sessions should not be retold as separate versions of the same booking argument.
Coordinate method: the pin, 34.014169, -118.287781, is the stadium-bowl center recorded by Wikidata. The U.S. Census TIGER address-range geocoder places the official 3911 South Figueroa Street address at 34.013397, -118.282812, about 466 metres east near the Figueroa-facing side of the property. A 500-metre precision radius is stated honestly to cover the difference between a bowl-center pin and an interpolated street-address point across this large complex. https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q849784 https://geocoding.geo.census.gov/geocoder/locations/onelineaddress?address=3911%20South%20Figueroa%20Street%2C%20Los%20Angeles%2C%20CA%2090037&benchmark=Public_AR_Current&format=json
