Concert History | Rolling Stones at Atlanta's Fox Theatre — A 2 A.M. Radio Alert Sold 4,000 Tickets in Three Hours

Five days before the Rolling Stones reached Atlanta’s Fox Theatre, the ticket sale became the event’s defining mechanism. A [contemporary United Press International dispatch](https://www.upi.com/Archives/1981/10/21/Tickets-to-a-Rolling-Stones-concert-in-Atlanta-were/9088842607347/) dated October 21 reported that local rock stations made limited announcements, then 4,000 tickets priced at $16.50 went on sale in downtown Atlanta at 2 a.m. They were gone within three hours. That figure is the number of tickets UPI said were offered—not the theatre’s legal capacity or a count of people who ultimately entered.

Historian Stan Deaton’s [Georgia Historical Society account](https://www.deatonpath.georgiahistory.com/one-night-only-40-years-later/) independently remembers fewer than 5,000 tickets, a concentrated overnight sale at roughly 2:30 a.m., and a sellout before most Atlantans learned the concert had been announced. His retrospective places the sale about two weeks before the show, conflicting with UPI’s October 21 dateline; this account follows the contemporaneous dispatch for the sale date. Later readers on Deaton’s page also disagree about which downtown counter handled the sale, so this account does not name it. The sources nevertheless agree on the consequential pattern: local radio, an overnight downtown sale, and almost no interval between announcement and exhaustion.

That pattern made publicity and distribution the same operation. It did not spread access widely; as an inference from the documented method, it favored people who were awake, listening, and able to reach downtown immediately. Deaton also notes that nearly every other booking on the tour used a stadium or large arena. In Atlanta, a roughly 4,000-ticket inventory compressed that demand into a movie palace.

The October 26 session also has a first-person check. Georgia keyboardist Chuck Leavell [dates his first Rolling Stones stage appearance](https://chuckleavell.com/2021/10/27/chucks-40th-anniversary-with-the-rolling-stones/) to this unannounced Fox Theatre show, identifies the Stray Cats as the opener, and recalls that Ian Stewart invited him only a couple of days beforehand. The small theatre stop therefore joined two forms of scarcity: admission was created through an overnight radio alert, while the performance itself still had room for a locally connected guest to enter on short notice.

**Coordinate method.** The pin marks the Fox Theatre building at 660 Peachtree Street NE, not an undocumented 1981 stage position.
