On October 1, 1981, the Rolling Stones played Rockford MetroCentre, the downtown arena now called BMO Center. [WROK’s account](https://1440wrok.com/wanna-buy-a-ticket-to-the-rolling-stones-at-the-rockford-metro-centre/) says its sister station 97ZOK organized a petition, collected 35,000 signatures, and persuaded the band to accept a Rockford date. A [contemporary United Press International dispatch](https://www.upi.com/Archives/1981/09/19/Rolling-Stones-accept-fans-invitation/1159369720000/), published September 19 under the headline “Rolling Stones accept fans’ invitation,” independently recorded the acceptance before the concert.

The petition was more than publicity. In effect, the station gathered thousands of individual requests into one visible measure of demand and carried that evidence to the people routing the tour. WROK places the Rockford show immediately after much larger stadium engagements in Philadelphia and Buffalo. The mechanism was local and practical: radio listeners demonstrated a market, the station amplified it, and an additional indoor-arena session appeared on the itinerary.
