On Thursday, 3 March 1988, Michael Jackson performed at Madison Square Garden in New York City in a concert for the United Negro College Fund. It was one session within a three-show Garden booking, but the trade press accounted for this date separately because it worked differently from the other two.
Amusement Business's “Boxscore: Top Concert Grosses,” printed in Billboard on 19 March, lists only 3 March under “Michael Jackson / Benefit for the United Negro College Fund.” It names Pepsi as promoter, reports a $600,000 gross and 19,000 in its attendance column, and marks the house a sellout. Those are the trade publication's reported box-office and attendance figures—not a later crowd estimate. On the same page, Billboard's review describes three Garden shows over four nights, 3–6 March. The separate benefit line therefore belongs to this session, not to the whole New York run. Source: https://www.worldradiohistory.com/Archive-All-Music/Billboard/80s/1988/BB-1988-03-19.pdf
The mechanism was a sponsor-promoted arena date whose full proceeds became scholarship money. UNCF's institutional account says that the entire $600,000 from the sold-out Madison Square Garden concert went to the Michael Jackson UNCF Endowed Scholarship Fund, created in 1986 for students at historically Black colleges and universities studying communications, performing arts and related fields. In an update published 21 May 2026, UNCF reported that the fund had supported 492 students from 41 HBCUs. That distinction matters for concert history: the benefit did not sit outside the tour's commercial machinery. Madison Square Garden supplied a sellout-sized room and standardized trade-press box-office reporting; Pepsi was recorded as promoter; UNCF received the proceeds. The later 5 and 6 March performances were part of the same venue run, but this 3 March booking carried the fundraising mechanism.
As checked on 7 September 2026, the arena continues to operate under the Madison Square Garden name. Its official directions give the address as 4 Pennsylvania Plaza: https://www.msg.com/madison-square-garden/directions
Coordinate method: New York City's Planning Labs geocoder, drawing on the city's Property Address Directory, places 4 Penn Plaza on tax lot BBL 1007810001 at 40.750518, -73.993527 (https://geosearch.planninglabs.nyc/v2/search?text=4%20Penn%20Plaza). Wikidata independently gives the arena point as 40°45′1.8″N, 73°59′36.6″W, or approximately 40.7505, -73.9935 (https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q186125). The pin is the arena building, not the position of the 1988 stage; a 120-metre precision radius covers that distinction.
