Racing | Formula 1 | 1997 European Grand Prix — Häkkinen Wins as Villeneuve Takes the Title

On 26 October 1997, the Formula One title fight arrived at Circuito Permanente de Jerez with Michael Schumacher on 78 points and Jacques Villeneuve on 77, leaving the season to be decided on the Andalusian circuit.

Qualifying produced an unprecedented dead heat: Villeneuve, Schumacher and Heinz-Harald Frentzen each recorded 1:21.072, and Villeneuve took pole because he had set the time first.

The race used Jerez’s 4.428 km Grand Prix configuration, including the Senna chicane added for the circuit’s 1994 Formula One return, over 69 laps.

Schumacher led away from the grid, Frentzen initially ran second, and Williams moved Villeneuve ahead of his teammate on lap eight so he could pursue the championship leader.

After the second pit-stop sequence, Villeneuve closed onto Schumacher and attacked at the Dry Sack right-hander on lap 48; the cars made contact, Schumacher stopped in the gravel and was classified as a non-finisher after 47 laps, while Villeneuve continued with a damaged car.

Villeneuve’s pace faded in the closing laps, and the two McLaren-Mercedes cars reached him before the finish: Mika Häkkinen won in 1:38:57.771, David Coulthard finished 1.654 seconds behind, and Villeneuve took third at 1.803 seconds.

The result gave Häkkinen his first Formula One victory, while Villeneuve’s four points raised him to 81 and secured the 1997 Drivers’ Championship.

The FIA World Motor Sport Council later excluded Schumacher from the championship standings; Formula One’s official record lists him as disqualified from the standings with 78 points, while the Jerez race classification remains unchanged.
