Racing | Formula 1 | 1995 Belgian Grand Prix — Schumacher Wins from 16th at Spa

On 27 August 1995, Michael Schumacher lined up the number 1 Benetton-Renault B195 in 16th place at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps for the LIII Grand Prix de Belgique, round eleven of the Formula One World Championship.

The race used Spa’s 6.974-kilometre 1995 Grand Prix configuration, with Eau Rouge and Raidillon restored after the temporary chicane used there in 1994 and the period Bus Stop chicane completing the lap.

Mixed qualifying conditions produced an unusual grid: Gerhard Berger and Jean Alesi formed a Ferrari front row, Damon Hill started eighth for Williams-Renault, and Schumacher’s 1:59.079 placed him on row eight.

The lead changed among Johnny Herbert, Alesi, David Coulthard, and Hill as Schumacher advanced through the field and reached the front during the first round of pit stops.

When rain arrived, Hill changed to wet tyres while Schumacher remained on slicks, placing the championship rivals on opposing strategies as grip varied around the long Ardennes circuit.

Hill briefly moved ahead, but the surface improved for slicks and Schumacher recovered the lead before heavier rain brought out the safety car and sent both drivers back for wet tyres.

Hill then served a stop-go penalty for speeding in the pit lane, while Schumacher completed 44 laps in 1:36:47.875 and won by 19.493 seconds.

Hill passed Martin Brundle’s Ligier-Mugen Honda on the final lap for second, leaving Brundle third at 24.998 seconds in Formula 1’s official classification.

David Coulthard, who retired after 13 laps, retained the official fastest lap at 1:53.412 on lap 11.

After the race, the stewards imposed a one-race ban on Schumacher, suspended for four Grands Prix, over his defensive driving against Hill; the sanction did not alter the Spa classification.

Winning from 16th made Spa the site of one of the deepest starting-position recoveries of Schumacher’s championship career.
