Racing | Formula 1 | 1996 Monaco Grand Prix — Panis Wins from 14th in the Rain

On 19 May 1996, Olivier Panis lined up 14th on the grid at the Circuit de Monaco in the blue number 9 Ligier JS43-Mugen-Honda, a place from which victory on Monaco’s narrow streets seemed remote.

The Grand Prix used Monaco’s 3.328 km, 20-turn configuration introduced in 1986, when the Nouvelle Chicane beyond the tunnel replaced the faster earlier sequence, and the scheduled distance was 78 laps.

Heavy rain fell before the start, leaving the road wet as the field set off, while pole-sitter Michael Schumacher’s race ended against the barrier on the opening lap and Damon Hill established the early lead.

Panis advanced through the traffic rather than merely surviving it, passing Martin Brundle, Mika Häkkinen and Johnny Herbert before a well-timed stop as the surface dried moved the Ligier into contention.

He then passed Eddie Irvine at the Loews hairpin, and when Hill’s Williams retired after 40 laps and Jean Alesi’s Benetton stopped after 60, Panis inherited the lead with David Coulthard closing behind.

The two-hour limit ended the race after 75 of the planned 78 laps, with Panis winning in 2:00:45.629, Coulthard second by 4.828 seconds and Johnny Herbert third by 37.503 seconds.

Those three podium cars were the only ones still running at the chequered flag, although Heinz-Harald Frentzen, Mika Salo, Mika Häkkinen and Eddie Irvine were also officially classified after completing sufficient distance.

The result was Panis’s first and only Formula One victory, Ligier’s ninth and final championship win, and the first Formula One victory for a Mugen-Honda-powered car.
